BenTibbetts's News

Hi Newgrounders,

Here are some of the things I have been up to:

  • Posting a new submission to the Audio Portal: Ambrosial is a short dance for harpsichord, harp, and vibraphone.
  • Posting a new submission to the Art Portal: Complacency is an visual art project I have been fiddling with for a while.
  • Interviewing TerraFriedSheep, a game developer best known for his downloadable game, Survivor. His most recent game, Survivor Reborn, features some original music by yours truly.

I am also wrapping up my studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. (I have been pursuing a Master of Music in Composition.) Now that school is ending, I am looking to take on more work. If you would like to hire me as a composer for your game or movie, please get in touch. My email address is contact@bentibbetts.net. Alternatively, there is a form on my website for custom music and audio commissions.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday, I developed a game called "Evasion Game" and posted it here on Newgrounds. It is a simple little game in which the player avoids oncoming spaceships. It was developed in GameMaker HTML5 1.0. I also posted the music I wrote for the game as an audio submission.

A little over a week ago, @joel2710 asked permission to use some of my music in a "small and strange game" he was working on. I said sure. The game was released two days ago. It is indeed small and strange and it's also pretty well-made. Although it's not a point-and-click adventure games, it reminds me of some of the point-and-click adventure games Sierra released in the 90's. It also reminds me of some of the games in the Newgrounds Art Games collection. It's called Mr. Pig's Quest for Pants. You can download the game from GameJolt. And if you want to support the author you can follow him here on Newgrounds.

Here are some screenshots from the download page:

Hi Newgrounders,

Last month, I contributed some music for an animation from WaldFlieger (Jeff Mumm), creator of the Guinea Something Good web comic.

Here are short interviews with two terrific game developers from Newgrounds.

The first interview is with Connor Ullmann (ConnorUllmann) creator of Quietus and Quietus II, Casus, Hollow and Seedling.

The second interview is with Nick Liow (Nutcasenightmare), creator of Gap Monsters, The Game and Reimagine The Game.

A lot of the music I have written over the past year has been video-gamey. Tracks like Super Hyperactivity 64, Going Home and The Right to Live are intended to be vaguely reminiscent of SNES-era music. These tracks and a handful of others belong to a soundtrack at which I have been chipping away. This soundtrack is intended to accompany a JRPG-style downloadable GameMaker game. The title of the game is "Chaos Weapon" and it is still in gradual development. To follow its progress, visit the creator's blog on 64 Digits.

This past month I finished the soundtrack, which is about two hours long. I have publicly released it at the following address:

benjamintibbetts.bandcamp.com/album/apologue-music-from-chaos-weapon

The album is pay-what-you-want, and there is no minimum. If you like the music, or if you just want to support me, you can pay as much or as little as it is worth to you. If you want to have the music on your hard drive but you don't want to spend money on it--or you don't have the money to spend--you can download the album free of charge. Either way I appreciate the support.

By the way, I have to extend my appreciation to those users who frequently comment on my music or follow me here on Newgrounds. Working within the context of a community is a lot more fun than working in a vacuum; it is to the credit of the community here that most of the critical feedback I get is encouraging, useful and clearly intended to help me make better music. Even though I didn't make all of the changes that were suggested to me, this album benefited from comments made by thoughtful and seasoned listeners. Thanks.

Hi Newgrounders,

The past two event days that I've participated in have been great. They've provided an excuse to check and see what some users have been up to. My own contributions to these events were audio submissions:
**Robo-Ballet was for Robot Day, and
**Super Hyperactivity 64 was for Madness Day.

Coming up: a pseudo-SNES-style soundtrack is in the works which should be ready for release in October. It will include about two hours of new music and revisited versions of a couple tracks released on NG already.

I'll end this news post with Xaltotun's Cosmic Horror, released on 9/18. Just look at that. Isn't that awesome.

Hi Newgrounders,

Back in 2006 I set up and operated a small phpBB community oriented towards current events and political discussion. It was fun. It did not require much commitment from anyone (including myself). Eventually it died out, and afterwards I was left with the impression of a good experience.

Today on a whim I decided to re-activate that forum, and re-design it with an aim towards creating a modest outlet for members to showcase their creative work including music, visual art and photography, creative writing, films and games. The idea is to create a small but open space for self-promotion and discussion. If this peaks your interest consider stopping by.
